The Algarve's Very First Retirement Village Celebrates 25 Years in July

19th May 2017

25 years ago in 1992, Monte da Palhagueira retirement village in Portugal’s beautiful Algarve region welcomed its very first residents. The retirement village, set within 22 acres of grounds, was the brain child of the late Mary Cornelius-Reid MBE, AM, following the successful launch of Winton House, Amesbury Abbey and Sutton Manor, where Mrs. Cornelius-Reid had pioneered the concept of “retirement villages”  in the 1970’s by building specialist retirement houses and apartments within the grounds of the nursing homes she operated at each location. Mary was formally recognised for her insight and achievements in 2001, with the award of an MBE for “services to health care”.

Alexandre Neves, a Portuguese national educated in the UK, now runs the Monte da Palhagueira as General Manager on behalf of the Cornelius-Reid family. Alexandre says, “Work initially began on the nursing home, which was an essential starting point for plans to create a purpose built village aimed at the growing 55 and over market within the Algarve. At that time, as now, there was little provision for nursing care in the region and for people wishing to remain in Portugal, rather than return to their native country, options were extremely limited.”

With the nursing home completed, 33 properties were then built over a 15-year period within the surrounding landscape, delightfully inspired and modeled on the nearby ancient Moorish town of Alte.
