The Algarve's Very First Retirement Village Celebrates 25 Years in July

19th May 2017

25 years ago in 1992, Monte da Palhagueira retirement village in Portugal’s beautiful Algarve region welcomed its very first residents. The retirement village, set within 22 acres of grounds, was the brain child of the late Mary Cornelius-Reid MBE, AM, following the successful launch of Winton House, Amesbury Abbey and Sutton Manor, where Mrs. Cornelius-Reid had pioneered the concept of “retirement villages”  in the 1970’s by building specialist retirement houses and apartments within the grounds of the nursing homes she operated at each location. Mary was formally recognised for her insight and achievements in 2001, with the award of an MBE for “services to health care”.

Alexandre Neves, a Portuguese national educated in the UK, now runs the Monte da Palhagueira as General Manager on behalf of the Cornelius-Reid family. Alexandre says, “Work initially began on the nursing home, which was an essential starting point for plans to create a purpose built village aimed at the growing 55 and over market within the Algarve. At that time, as now, there was little provision for nursing care in the region and for people wishing to remain in Portugal, rather than return to their native country, options were extremely limited.”

With the nursing home completed, 33 properties were then built over a 15-year period within the surrounding landscape, delightfully inspired and modeled on the nearby ancient Moorish town of Alte.

Monte da Palhagueira provides the very best in nursing, residential and convalescence care, delivered by a highly experienced team of British nurses. The care home is designed over two floors and benefits from lift access to the galleried first floor, with its feature skylight providing a light and airy ambience. Each room has its own individual character and many have patios or balconies from which residents can enjoy the village gardens and the delightful views over the surrounding countryside.

Facilities also include a resident’s dining room, a physiotherapy unit, a hairdressing service and a secluded swimming pool with ample seating and viewing areas. The Nursing Home is open to both residents and non-residents of Monte da Palhagueira Village and also offers respite and day care services, with prices from €1,105 to €1,365 + IVA per week, subject to care needs assessment.

Independent living properties include apartments, town houses and villas offering a range of accommodation from 1-3 bedrooms and access to the spacious garden areas throughout the village. Standard facilities comprise a 24-hour emergency call system and an inclusive maid service, while amenities include a village hall, swimming pools, the Anglican Church of St. Luke, and the renowned Le Marquis restaurant. Village properties are transacted in Sterling and are available from £134,950 and there are apartments available to try before you buy.
